Dolpa Trek
Dolpa, the Himalayan trekker's forbidden Shangri-La,
has long been one of the most remote, secretive, and restricted areas of
northwestern Nepal. This region includes extensive areas of high, arid terrain
very similar to Tibet. Home of undisturbed Buddhist cultures and an extensive
natural history quite different from that of the Himalayas to the east. The
very few western travellers permitted into Dolpa were primarily scholars and
researchers. We will trek from Jumla across the lower southern passes, explore
the areas between Tarakot and Phoksundo Tal, before finally crossing the
Kagmara La on our return to Jumla.
Dolpa is located inside the
Phoksundo National Park of midwestern Nepal, hidden behind the Dhaulagiri
massif, close to the Tibetan Plateau. Isolated from the rest of Nepal by a
series of very high passes which are frequently closed by snow, Dolpa remains a
truly remote corner of Nepal. Time has seemingly stood still here for centuries
as the inhabitants, of Tibetan origin, continue to live and work the way they
have done for generations. The delicately balanced ecosystem encompasses
a wild and wonderful variety of plants and wildlife, including the blue sheep
and leopard. We are sure that you will agree that the trek through Dolpa is an
experience not easily forgotten.
